Human Transit by Jarrett Walker
While there is a revised edition, this is based on the 2012 edition.
This book in its introduction lays out the question it wants to answer, and it is simply:
“What is quality public transit? Who can realistically expect to be served by it? What kinds of quality matter? What are the goals we want transit to achieve, and how do we navigate tough spots where these goals conflict?”
It is not a book that says what mode is best but rather shows where and how transit can be successful, whether by bus, bus rapid transit, light rail, or heavy rail.
It is well structured, laying out step by step what needs to be done. By using examples from around the world he shows how a system can be successful in building an urban area that works.
Used editions are easily available, and you will find that is useful as you will want to highlight many of his ideas and solutions.
